Two chicken recipes, no wine.

june 27, 2010: victoria made two chicken recipes tonight: grilled chicken in spiced yogurt via http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Grilled-Chicken-Breasts-in-Spiced-Yogurt-109736 and grilled chicken with shallots and white wine reduction via http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/pan-seared-chicken-breasts-with-shallots/Detail.aspx

she used the napa cellars chardonnay (a dry wine with green apple overtones) for the gravy in the shallots and chicken recipe. we thought the grilled chicken in spiced yogurt was better. it was more flavorful and moist.

2008 Nobilo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc: Fruity, refreshing, good.

june 19, 2010: brian and jennifer brought this new zealand variety with them to dinner to match the chicken. they had bought it at winetree. it was a tasty, light and fruity wine, very easy to drink, without much grapefruit. we all liked it (though jennifer is not really a wine person). 13 percent alcohol. gift.

2008 Napa Cellars Napa Valley Chardonnay: Definitely green apple flavor, crisp.

june 19, 2010: victoria bought this californian at schnucks. we needed a dry white wine for a chicken gravy recipe via http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/perfect-roast-chicken-recipe/index.html for a dinner party with brian, jennifer, dharma and little daphne. we should have roasted this chicken for longer than we did, but lesson learned. this chardonnay was notable in that it wasn't buttery and it didn't have vanilla overtones, which made it more tolerable than usual. 13.5 percent alcohol. around $17.

2008 Cimicky Trumps Barossa Valley Shiraz: Blackberry nose, thick consistency, slightly bitter.

we paired this with grilled green onion brats and vegetables. this australian was definitely syrupy, one of the denser shiraz we've had. victoria couldn't really drink much of it because it was bitter without having a strong jammy contrast. but greg really liked it and would get it again.14.5 percent alcohol. purchased at winetree. about $20.

2005 Chateau Greysac Medoc and 2007 Torbreck Barossa Valley Roussanne Marsanne

june 26, 2010: emilie and victoria prepared dinner for alan and marie-paule at greg and victoria's house while greg was up in indianapolis for the weekend. we made homemade spinach fetticini via http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/spinach-pasta-dough-recipe/index.html.

we also made a shrimp recipe we got out of a southern living magazine, and a peach cobbler recipe in ramakins with a pie crust recipe via http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/pate-brisee-pie-dough

alan brought over the medoc and the roussanne marsanne blend. both were wonderful, very soft and mellow. the medoc was fruity and the rousanne marsanne had overtones of lemon and honey (to victoria) and honeysuckle (to emilie).

the medoc was 13 percent alcohol. the roussanne (65 percent) and the marsanne (35 percent) blend was 13.5 percent alcohol.

2007 Dr. von Basserman-Jordan Riesling: Slight honey, very good.

june 13, 2010: we paired this german with some fresh sea scallops victoria bought at whole foods in louisville, where she had gone for the day with emilie.

she battered the scallops with this recipe via http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Seared-Sea-Scallops/Detail.aspx and we heated up some leftover red creamer potatoes. the sea scallops turned out very well, with no iodine flavor. we were able to make the scallop batter with all ingredients in-house.

we were originally intending to pair this german riesling with a honey-cilantro chicken recipe last week. but since that didn't work out, we popped this one open, and it was a pretty decent pairing given the fact that we had no pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc on hand. there was definite freshness to this riesling, and the strong yellow color made a distinctive showing in the glass. we'd get this wine again, definitely.

12.5 percent alcohol. about $20 from big red liquors.

2008 Dona Paula Los Cardos Malbec: Gentle, easy to drink, some cherry.

june 12, 2010: this mendoza, argentinian, was opened on a lark after a full day at work. it was definitely gentle and soft in texture, with some berry to the nose. it was almost as smooth as a gascon malbec, without the slight sweetness. winetree. 14 percent alcohol.

2008 Terra Andina Merlot: Easy to drink.

one more of dennis' recommendations from winetree worked out well, again. this central valley chilean was definitely easy to drink, with cherry overtones. 13 percent alcohol.

2004 Row Eleven: Very aromatic and fully flavored.

june 11, 2010: victoria prepared grilled salmon marinated in a dijon mustard sauce that can be found via http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/asian-grilled-salmon-recipe/index.html. earlier, she stopped by winetree for a pinot noir. the owner recommended a full-flavored californian to match what ended up being a very powerfully seasoned salmon. this salmon had so much seasoning that we think it might be better to use this marinade with a milder fish since the mustard/soy sauce disguised the natural flavor of the salmon.

this santa maria valley californian, by the way, was everything it was promised to be. we both got plums and earthiness to the nose, and it was a strong enough match with the salmon. in fact, this was one of the most aromatic wines we've had in some time, though it could have been a bit more structurally elegant. victoria prefers silky pinot, and it was a bit acidic with inklings of roughness. about $36. high-octane at 14.9 percent alcohol.

Cilantro-honey chicken. No wine this time.

may 31, 2010:  victoria prepared a marinated chicken recipe using a recipe via http://www.recipezaar.com/recipe/Cilantro-Chicken-181195. she started with a whole chicken which she then cut up into smaller pieces so she could grill them. this marinated in ziploc bags for about eight hours. victoria decided to make this particular recipe because we had leftover fresh cilantro.

victoria did not like the way this turned out, probably because of all the honey. greg enjoyed it, but we won't make this again.
